Exclusive Q & A with Chai Wingfield

I had the pleasure of speaking with Chai Wingfield, currently a producer for the CBS This Morning show and works on the live team, in New York City. “I help make sure segments are ready for air, as well as briefing our guests of the day ahead of their interviews, '' she says. Born and raised in Orangeburg, South Carolina attending Charleston Southern University and Webster University. Chai had to learn her way around the industry before relocating to a new city. She was an entertainer reporter for Bounce Around Charleston, production assistant for WCSC TV Live 5 News, and then moved on to be a PM producer for WCSC. Which gave her experience and led her to be an associate producer for ABC13 Houston. “ I have a passion for all things entertainment,” says Chai. She one day plans to do more with entertainment news; this is only the beginning for her.
What has been your biggest career challenge and how did you overcome it and why?
Chai: My biggest career challenge has just been getting out of my own. I struggle with feeling like I’m not doing enough or that I’m not always good enough, but I pray and jump back into working and perfecting my craft. Everyday isn’t perfect, and I have to constantly remind myself that it’s ok to make mistakes, because that’s what helps you learn and grow. So when I make a mistake (which I have made plenty of!) I just extend myself some grace and shake it off.
How do you personally solve conflict?
Chai: I solve conflict by speaking up and communicating effectively. I’m not someone who likes for there to be tension or drama, especially in the workplace, so I like to address it and move forward.
What are three things that you have learned new in your position that you have not learned before?
Chai: Three things that I have learned in my position that I haven’t learned before, or maybe it’s better to say that I haven’t always done, is to be more assertive and fight for myself, to celebrate my wins big or small, and to always trust my gut.
Can you share a project that you are most proud of?
Chai: A project that I am most proud of would be co-producing a segment featuring SZA. I love music and entertainment so that opportunity was just a dream come true. I also loved being a part of that project because I’m very passionate about exposing our audience to artists and information that they may not be aware of.
Name three leaders in your field who have inspired you and why?
Chai: Three leaders in my field who have inspired me are Angie Martinez, Issa Rae, and Karen Civil. I love these women because of their work ethic and for how they fight for women to continue to have a seat at the table.
What are the biggest issues in the news industry today?
Chai: In my opinion, the biggest issues are the lack of diversity (although I can say it is getting a bit better), and specifically not enough Black men and women and people of color in positions of power to create content that tells stories that impact our communities.
What would you say is your best skill?
Chai: My best skill is that I know how to talk to people. There’s no one I can’t connect with and that is so important in this business because it helps you network and build long lasting, personal relationships.
What was your dream city after graduation?
Chai: My dream city to move to after graduating was honestly between New York and Los Angeles. I’ve always gone back and forth between the two cities because either one was ideal for my career. I didn’t end up in either fresh out of college and looking back I’m so glad I didn’t because mentally I wasn’t ready.
How was the transition from the South to New York?
Chai: Relocating to New York was one of the hardest moves I’ve ever made. I’m a southern girl and New York is fast, so it took me a while to get adjusted. To be honest I’m still adjusting but my confidence is growing and I’m definitely learning how to enjoy the moment I am in and not focus so much on what’s to come!
What is the best advice you can offer myself and others who are interested in the entertainment industry?
Chai: The best advice I could offer you Jala is to NEVER lose yourself. This industry will try and change you to fit the mold they think defines who you are, but it’s imperative that you stay true to yourself, your morals and values, and your beliefs. Stand out and know that it’s ok to be different. Most importantly, no matter how hard the journey gets, never give up! There are going to be some days when quitting seems like the easiest and best thing to do, but you don’t want to go through life wondering “what if”. On tough days, reset and tap in with those who love and truly know you. For me, I always seek guidance from my mom and mentors. They hype me and get me back on my feet and back out there. Don’t ever take no for an answer. Remember, for every no, there’s someone who will grant you a yes, so don’t give up!
