An online viral story has Texas Southern University students rethinking their friendships.
Shanquella Robinson, a 25-year-old woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, traveled on a group trip to Mexico Oct. 28 with six friends and never returned.
In this story, the details are chilling and disturbing. The hashtag #ShanquellaRobinson has been spread across social media by millions as her family and loved-one's search for answers surrounding her death.
Within 24 hours of arriving, Robinson’s mother received a phone call she will never forget. She was told her daughter had died while on the trip.
“They said she wasn’t feeling well. She had alcohol poisoning,” Robinson’s mom, Salamondra Robinson, told WBTW. “They couldn’t get a pulse. Each one of the people that were there with her was telling different stories.”
Robinson was found dead in her hotel room on Oct. 29, and the alleged cause of her death was alcohol poisoning. However, the autopsy report from the FBI and Mexican authorities' conflicts with her friends’ initial stories to the family.
According to the death certificate, Shanquella Robinson's death was caused by a severe spinal cord injury and atlas luxation.
When the autopsy came back, they said it didn’t have anything to do with the alcohol,” Robinson’s mother told reporters. “[They] said that she had a broken neck and her spine in the back was cracked. She had been beaten.”
Robinson’s friends returned to the United States but left the 25-year-old’s body in Mexico. The family paid $6,000 and waited two weeks to receive her body.
"It is absurd that no one stayed with the body, not even one or two people. I would never leave my friends anywhere let alone in a whole different country. You never know who your real friends are and it’s scary.” TSU senior, Arjinee Williams said.
Over the last few days, a very telling video surfaced on the internet. It shows a woman attacking Robinson in the hotel room repeatedly hitting her in the head. The male filming the video can be heard saying, “Quella can you at least fight back?”
The video is graphic and arouses a great deal of suspicion as Robinson is seen being assaulted and defenseless completely nude. The time and date of the filming has not been verified.
"I have an older sister and I couldn't imagine finding out something tragic happened to her while on vacation with friends. How could a man sit back and allow a woman to assault another woman and not step in?" TSU student photographer, Kameron Traylor said.
Following reports of Robinson's death, Congresswoman Alma Adams issued the following statement:
“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Shanquella Robinson, and my heart goes out to her family and those who loved her. No parent deserves to suffer this tragedy.
“As with all cases involving constituents, our Congressional Office is ready to assist in any way we can with federal agencies. Any constituent who needs assistance with a federal agency can open a case with our office by calling 704-344-9950 or visiting adams.house.gov.”
Robinson's family has set up a GoFundMe account to help cover the cost of funeral arrangements and legal fees.
