Kanye West, the controversial king, has done it again, stirring up the pot!
The YEEZY founder and Donda 2 artist made a guest appearance on a recent episode of ‘Drink Champs’ hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN on Saturday night, Oct. 15, The episode went viral, but not for good reasons. It received tons of backlash and confusion in regard to West’s statements about George Floyd and Jewish people.
Social media went into a frenzy after West, who is now legally known as Ye, alleged George Floyd’s death was actually caused by fentanyl and not by being suffocated by a police officer’s knee.
"I watched the George Floyd documentary that Candace Owens put out. One of the things that his two roommates said was they want a tall guy like me, and the day that he died, he said a prayer for eight minutes," Ye said. "They hit him with the fentanyl. If you look, the guy’s knee wasn’t even on his neck like that."
He also proceeded to talk about Jews and how he believes that Jews are controlling the media and entertainment. Ye stated that Jewish people have owned the Black voice.
"Either it’s through us wearing the Ralph Lauren shirt, or it’s all of us being signed to a record label, or having a Jewish manager, or being signed to a Jewish basketball team, or doing a movie on a Jewish platform like Disney. I respect what the Jewish people have done, and how they brought their people together," Ye continued.
After the interview aired, many were upset with N.O.R.E. and Revolt TV for allowing Ye, to be given the platform to speak. As a result, the decision was made to cancel the episode entirely. Since then, N.O.R.E has apologized.
Earlier this month, the rapper made headlines for wearing a T-shirt with the slogan "White Lives Matter" during Paris Fashion Week at his Yeezy season 9 show. Alongside him was conservative commentator Candace Owens, who wore the same shirt.
Marc Lamont Hill, an activist, author, and professor, tweeted, "Kanye West's decision to wear a "White Lives Matter" shirt is disgusting, dangerous, and irresponsible. Some of y’all will rush to defend him. You should ask yourselves why."
The US bank, JP Morgan Chase, has even kicked Ye to the curb, ending its relationship. Although the decision predates his recent controversies.
It’s being speculated that Ye could be having another spiraling mental breakdown. It’s still very unclear exactly what’s going on, but there are still many people who still have genuine love and respect for the designer.
The rapper Joey Badass voiced his thoughts recently on Twitter about Ye’s recent interview. On Monday evening, Oct. 17, he tweeted, "We can have healthy disagreements. And yes Kanye can do a much better job at his delivery but it’s the same old story. Magnifying a small piece of what he said and taking it out of context. The mass media needs to learn some new moves it’s corny and so obvious at this point."
The 27-year-old continued in another tweet, expressing that he’s tried to ignore most of what Ye said for his own peace of mind. But strongly feels it was wack for his interview to be removed and censored, Ye’s right to freedom of speech.
Hopefully, Ye can take a moment to pause, reflect, and learn from his recent actions. So, he can continue to make art and be the guy everyone loved from the start.
